Food for the 4th of July!

My favorite way to spend our day of independence is by making some great food with friends and family! How do you like to celebrate the 4th of July? Here’s a great recipe for Crab Cakes!

* 1 pound crabmeat, picked free of shells
* 1/3 cup crushed crackers (recommended: Ritz)
* 3 green onions (green and white parts), finely chopped
* 1/2 cup finely chopped bell pepper
* 1/4 cup mayonnaise
* 1 egg
* 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
* 1 teaspoon dry mustard
* 1/2 lemon, juiced
* 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
* 1 teaspoon salt
* Dash cayenne pepper
* Flour, for dusting
* 1/2 cup peanut oil
* Favorite dipping sauce, for serving

flag 6In a large bowl, mix together all ingredients, except for the flour and peanut oil. Shape into patties and dust with flour.

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. When oil is hot, carefully place crab cakes, in batches, in pan and fry until browned, about 4 to 5 minutes. Carefully flip crab cakes and fry on other side until golden brown, about 4 minutes. Serve warm with preferred sauce.

Small Room into Large Room!

June 30, 2010 by Alicia

While living in an apartment has its advantages sometimes you have to sacrifice a few things. For me it’s the space, but I don’t mind at all because I’ve found ways to make my rooms look larger if they are lacking in size. What do you do in order to make your smaller rooms look larger? Check out these tips!

  • Plan ahead- What’s the use of your room? Make plans on what kind of style you want for your room.
  • Keep the Clutter Out- Leave out all the small things and put away everything in it place
  • Furniture- Make sure you have size appropiate furniture in your room. You don’t want to have a king size bed in a guest room!
  • Decor- Make sure your accents coordinate well, these will help with the “size” of your room.
  • Color- Use art to have some color on your walls, think vibrant color and accents!

3 Ways to Summer up your Pad for Free!

June 4, 2010 by Alicia

sofaOpen up your windows and take a breath of fresh air! Summer is a great time to clear out the old, stale air of a closed-up apartment and rejuvenate your space and spirits. It’s easy to put a smile on my face with the warmth of the sun’s rays warming my cheek while the cool breeze whisks across my skin.

How do we match this happy feeling of our spirits with the look of our apartment? Here are a few suggestions that will freshen up your pad – without spending one cent:

1) Move your furniture: Every once in a while I will re-arrange our furniture in our apartment. It gives me a sense of change without having a giant project on our hands. This small difference inspires me to enjoy my belongings in a new, refreshing perspective.

2) Miscellaneous Candles: Add a soft glow to your day or evening and relax into the warm, comforting look and scents. I have a few candles in my drawers that have been there for months without being lit. I’m not sure if I am saving them for a special occasion or what. But when they are mismatched and random, I don’t need an excuse to bring them out and light them. I can do so for my own personal enjoyment.

3) Develop a Rotation: My Mom is a decorating diva and has nick-knacks for every season. It is fun to walk into her house at the beginning of the season to see all the small changes she has incorporated into her style. Whether or not you have this type of collection, you can still rotate different blankets, pillows or pictures throughout your apartment to add some spice to your digs when you’re feeling the need for change.

Change can be a scary thing, but it can also be fun and exciting. Start small and welcome it into your apartment for a new feel to your same old, same old. What are some of the changes you have made in your apartment that have brought a smile to your face?
